Because everyone loves a good list. This list has some pretty practical things that you can apply to your every day life to make it easier to keep your resolution this year. And this is just the beginning, there are lots of other things you can do to assure an awesome start to a new year. Check out my recipes to get you started.
- 90/10 Rule
This is a pretty simple concept. What it means is, 90% of the time in your life you should eat things that are good for you; Vegetables, grass-fed meat, nuts, seeds, grains, fruit and so on. 10% of the time, eat whatever the fuck you want. That’s it. It doesn’t have to be exact, so don’t take this as calculating percentages and calories. Fuck that nonsense. Just use your best judgement. I wouldn’t do the “cheat day” thing that a lot of people do, because then you’re just compiling all your junk food into one day and that could be too much for your digestion to handle. Spread it out. Have an egg with toast for breakfast, have a salad for lunch, maybe have some organic chocolate and nuts as a snack. Hey so far so good, so if you want to have a slice of pizza for dinner, sure why not, don’t feel guilty about it because you’ve been really good today. For desert have some organic chocolate. It’s not rocket science people, just do your best.
2. Home Cooking
This is essential for losing weight. You can workout all you want but without the proper diet, you aren’t going to lose anything. Not to mention that all that McDonald’s you’re eating isn’t doing your arteries any good, which in turn could lead to long term illnesses like diabetes. Home cooking is the ONLY way you can assure yourself that you are eating well. Checking your labels on products in the grocery store is very important, and I’m not talking about the nutrition facts. The ingredient list is the MOST important thing. Look for things that have 1 or 2 ingredients in them. Like produce, that is an obvious one. Another example is peanut butter, it should only contain peanuts, not hydrogenated soy bean oil or sugar, JUST peanuts. Also when you are looking at an ingredient list, the first item on that list is the majority make up of that product. So if you see sugar first on your ingredient list, put it down, it means that the product is mostly made up of sugar.
Another essential for weight loss. Sorry to break all your hearts, but there is no magic pill, and there probably never will be. Get over it. Now that we’ve moved on, incorporating exercise in your life can be difficult with a busy schedule, but it can be done. Even if you just start out with one day a week, its something. Even if you just take a walk outside for 30 minutes, its something. I’m just asking you to do something. Take baby steps, that’s ok, nobody is watching you. There isn’t a Jillian Michael standing behind you, screaming at you to move your ass. Just take it slow. There are so many free websites that have workouts you can follow if you have never worked out before. One I love is fitness blender. You can created a workout calendar to keep you on track.
4. Be positive
I know this seems hokey, but it does work. Being positive about your efforts can increase the likelihood of your being successful at whatever it is you want to accomplish. This means don’t beat yourself up when you have a doughnut at work instead of fruit. It’s ok, shit happens. You might want to just throw the towel in after that one hiccup, but don’t. It’s not a big deal, just keep doing your 90/10 rule. Feeling guilty about what you’re eating isn’t going to help you, it’s only going to make you feel shameful and upset. If you just brush it off and say, it’s cool I’ll have lots of veggies for dinner tonight, then you’re still winning. That’s what I love about this 90/10 attitude, you can’t ever lose. Just do your best, stay positive, and don’t limit yourself. If you’re craving something then have it, when you restrict yourself of the things you want to eat, you are guaranteed to fail. Just be smart about it, and don’t cry about it.
Sometimes when we think we are hungry, we are actually thirsty. Your body can be tricky to figure out, so you have to listen to it. Have water at your desk and drink it throughout the day, it might actually curb your appetite. I don’t believe there is any true formula to how much water each person should drink. If you are thirsty, then drink, and don’t over do it, because it is possible to drink too much water, just like when you overeat. So the next time you think you are hungry, drink some water with lemon, or cucumber or whatever you like with your water, and see what happens. Make sure you are drinking filtered water, unfortunately tap water is not what it used to be. Studies have shown that various drugs have been showing up in tap water from people flushing them down the toilet. So unless you want to be drinking prozac, I would filter it.
